Description

A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's ext4 filesystem code involved improper error handling in the ext4_read_inline_folio function. The issue was that a BUG_ON() macro was used when inline data size exceeded PAGE_SIZE, causing a kernel panic. The fix replaces BUG_ON() with proper error handling that logs the error, releases resources to prevent memory leaks, and returns an error code indicating filesystem corruption, allowing the system to continue running.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in the Linux kernel ext4 filesystem was due to the use of BUG_ON() in ext4_read_inline_folio when inline data size exceeded PAGE_SIZE. This caused a kernel panic, resulting in a denial of service. The fix replaces the BUG_ON() with proper error handling: the error is logged via ext4_error_inode(), the buffer head is released to prevent memory leaks, and -EFSCORRUPTED is returned to indicate filesystem corruption. This change prevents kernel panic and allows the system to continue operating despite the filesystem corruption.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability can cause a denial of service by triggering a kernel panic when inline data size exceeds PAGE_SIZE in ext4. There is no confidentiality or integrity impact reported. The system availability is affected due to the kernel panic. The fix prevents this by handling the error gracefully.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, monitoring for kernel updates addressing this issue is recommended. No specific workaround is provided in the available data.
