GHSA-8j3g-f24p-4mpw: websocket-driver: Memory exhaustion in HTTP header parser

Published: 07/15/2026 (07/15/2026, 22:05:39 UTC)
Source: GCVE Database
Product: websocket-driver

Description

A memory exhaustion vulnerability exists in the websocket-driver library's HTTP header parser. When used to implement a WebSocket server on a TCP server or to complement a WebSocket client, an attacker can send an HTTP request or response with an unbounded number of headers, causing the process to consume excessive memory and potentially crash. This issue is fixed in version 0.8.1 by limiting the total size of HTTP headers and request/response lines to 32 kB. No workarounds are currently known.

Technical Analysis

The websocket-driver library prior to version 0.8.1 contains a vulnerability (CVE-2026-54465) where the HTTP header parser does not limit the total size of headers or request/response lines. This allows a remote peer to cause memory exhaustion by sending a never-ending list of headers, leading to unbounded memory consumption in the receiving process. The vulnerability affects usage scenarios where websocket-driver is used to implement a WebSocket server on top of a raw TCP server or to complement a WebSocket client. The issue is addressed in version 0.8.1 by enforcing a 32 kB limit on the total size of HTTP headers and lines.

Potential Impact

An attacker can cause the affected process to consume an unbounded amount of memory by sending a crafted HTTP request or response with an excessively large number of headers. This can lead to denial of service due to memory exhaustion and potential process crash. The impact is limited to scenarios where websocket-driver is used as described and does not require authentication or user interaction.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade websocket-driver to version 0.8.1 or later, which includes an official fix limiting the total size of HTTP headers and request/response lines to 32 kB. No known workarounds exist. Users should apply this patch promptly to prevent potential memory exhaustion attacks.
