GitHub CLI (gh) is GitHub’s official command line tool. (CVE-2026-64653)
Description
GitHub CLI (gh) versions prior to 2.97.0 contain a vulnerability where HTTP request URLs interpolate variable path components without percent encoding. This allows URL path metacharacters in attacker-controlled repository or resource values to cause the CLI to address a different API endpoint or resource than intended. The issue is fixed in version 2.97.0.

Technical Analysis
GitHub CLI (gh) versions before 2.97.0 improperly handle URL path components by not percent encoding variable parts of HTTP request URLs. This flaw allows an attacker controlling repository or resource values to inject URL path metacharacters, potentially redirecting the CLI to unintended API endpoints or resources. The vulnerability is resolved in version 2.97.0.
Potential Impact
An attacker who can control repository or resource values may cause the GitHub CLI to send requests to different API endpoints than intended by the user, potentially leading to unexpected behavior or information disclosure. The CVSS 4.0 vector indicates network attack vector, low complexity, no privileges required, user interaction needed, and low scope and impact. Overall, the impact is medium severity.
Mitigation Recommendations
Upgrade GitHub CLI (gh) to version 2.97.0 or later, where this issue is fixed. No other specific mitigations are indicated.
