GitHub CLI (gh) is GitHub's official command line tool. (CVE-2026-64654)
Description
GitHub CLI (gh) versions prior to 2.97.0 have a vulnerability where multiple commands print externally controlled content without neutralizing terminal escape sequences. This allows an attacker who can influence that content to embed escape sequences that may be interpreted by the user's terminal, potentially causing cosmetic manipulation or, on some terminal emulators, command execution. The issue affects various commands beyond those addressed in a previous related vulnerability (CVE-2026-45803). The vulnerability is fixed in version 2.97.0.

Technical Analysis
GitHub CLI (gh) before version 2.97.0 improperly handles terminal escape sequences in output from commands that display gist, API, pull request, release, codespace, skill, or agent-task content. An attacker able to control this content can embed escape sequences that the terminal interprets, leading to impacts ranging from cosmetic changes to potential command execution on some terminal emulators. This vulnerability extends the scope of a prior issue limited to 'gh run view --log'. The vulnerability is resolved in version 2.97.0.
Potential Impact
An attacker who can influence the content displayed by affected GitHub CLI commands can embed terminal escape sequences that may be interpreted by the user's terminal. This can result in cosmetic manipulation of terminal output or, on certain terminal emulators, arbitrary command execution. The vulnerability requires user interaction (running affected commands) and does not require privileges or user authentication.
Mitigation Recommendations
Upgrade GitHub CLI to version 2.97.0 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed. No other mitigation is indicated by the vendor advisory.
