AI-suggested
A fix is available in GitPython versions after 3.1.62. Users should upgrade to a version that includes the patch addressing this vulnerability. Until then, avoid cloning repositories from untrusted sources or applying additional validation/sanitization on branch names before checkout. The vulnerability is due to missing validation of positional arguments in Head.checkout(), so ensure that the library version used includes the fix for this issue.
Description
GitPython versions up to 3.1.62 contain a vulnerability in the Head.checkout() method where an attacker-controlled branch name can be used to perform an arbitrary file read. This occurs because the method does not properly sanitize its positional argument (the branch name), allowing injection of unsafe Git command options such as --pathspec-from-file. An attacker who can get the application to clone a repository they control with a malicious default branch name can cause the application to read and return the contents of arbitrary files accessible to the process.
