AI-suggested
A fix is available in GitPython version 2.26.0 that disables merge_includes when parsing .gitmodules in Submodule._config_parser(). Users should upgrade to version 2.26.0 or later to remediate this vulnerability. Until upgraded, avoid processing untrusted repositories with GitPython or implement custom exception handling to prevent leakage of exception messages containing file content.
Description
GitPython versions from 2.1.0 up to but not including 2.26.0 contain a vulnerability where the SubmoduleConfigParser used to parse the .gitmodules file does not disable the merge_includes feature. This allows an attacker controlling the .gitmodules file to specify an [include] directive that references arbitrary local files. When the victim enumerates submodules, GitPython attempts to include and parse these files, and if the included file is not a valid git config, an exception is raised that leaks the first line of the file in the error message. This results in local file content disclosure of the first line of any readable file on the victim's system. The issue is fixed in version 2.26.0.
