AI-suggested

A fix is available in GitPython version 2.24.0 that disables environment variable expansion in all relevant URL handling functions. Users should upgrade to version 2.24.0 or later to remediate this vulnerability. No additional mitigations are required if the upgrade is applied.

Description

GitPython versions from 2.1.0 up to but not including 2.24.0 contain a vulnerability where environment variables in URLs passed to Repo.create_remote() or Remote.add() are expanded and embedded into the repository configuration. This can lead to sensitive environment variables being written into .git/config or .gitmodules and subsequently transmitted to an attacker-controlled host during fetch or pull operations. The issue arises because the fix for a prior vulnerability only disabled environment variable expansion in Repo.clone_from(), but not in Repo.create_remote() or Remote.add(), which still use a helper function with environment variable expansion enabled by default.
