Description

NLTK's downloader component has a filesystem containment bypass vulnerability where it fails to treat pre-existing hardlinks inside the install tree as unsafe. This allows an attacker with write access to the downloader root on the same filesystem to overwrite files outside the intended installation directory by exploiting hardlinks. The issue affects versions 3.9.4 and 3.10.0-rc2 and is fixed in version 3.10.3.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in NLTK's downloader (CVE-2026-81727) arises from its handling of hardlinks during ZIP extraction. While symlink escapes are blocked, pre-existing hardlinks inside the install tree are treated as normal files. This allows an attacker who can place a hardlink inside the downloader root pointing to an outside file to cause the extraction process to overwrite that outside file. The flaw affects the download and incremental download methods in versions 3.9.4 and 3.10.0-rc2. The root cause is insufficient validation of hardlinks at extraction targets. The issue is patched in version 3.10.3 by treating hardlinks as unsafe and verifying write paths at the inode level.

Potential Impact

An attacker with write access to the shared downloader root on the same filesystem can exploit this vulnerability to overwrite arbitrary files outside the intended installation directory. This can lead to integrity violations and potential denial of service or privilege escalation depending on the overwritten file. The vulnerability does not affect confidentiality but impacts integrity and availability.

Mitigation Recommendations

A patch is available in NLTK version 3.10.3 that treats pre-existing hardlinks as unsafe during extraction and verifies that write paths remain within the intended install tree at the inode level. Users should upgrade to version 3.10.3 or later to remediate this issue. Until patched, ensure that the downloader root directory is not writable by untrusted users to prevent exploitation.
