Since this is a protocol-level issue, mitigation may require network-level controls such as filtering or restricting GRE/GRE6 traffic to trusted sources. Monitor vendor advisories for any official fixes or guidance.
Description
The GRE and GRE6 protocols (RFC2784) lack validation or verification of the source of network packets. This vulnerability allows attackers to spoof and route arbitrary traffic through exposed network interfaces, potentially leading to spoofing, access control bypass, and other unexpected network behaviors. It is similar in nature to CVE-2020-10136. The vulnerability has a medium severity with a CVSS score of 6.5.
