Homebrew 7.0.0 gets built-in GUI, better security controls

Source Bleeping Computer

Description

Homebrew package manager version 7.0.0 has been released with a built-in vulnerability scanner, stronger security controls, and the full release of its native BrewUI graphical interface. [...]

Impact

The update enhances security posture for Homebrew users by enabling vulnerability scanning of installed packages and dependencies, allowing users to identify and address known vulnerabilities. The inclusion of a Homebrew-specific advisory database helps distinguish patched from unpatched vulnerabilities. Improved sandboxing reduces risk by limiting access to user home directories and isolating network operations. These changes reduce the attack surface and help prevent exploitation of vulnerable packages. There is no indication of new vulnerabilities introduced by this release.

Defensive guidance

Users should upgrade to Homebrew 7.0.0 to benefit from the built-in vulnerability scanner, improved sandboxing, and security controls. Running the 'brew vulns' command regularly can help identify vulnerable packages. The advisory database and OSV integration provide ongoing vulnerability tracking. No additional mitigation is required beyond upgrading and using the new scanning features.

Summary

Homebrew 7.0.0 adds a native GUI (BrewUI) for easier package browsing and management on macOS 26 and later. It introduces a new command 'brew vulns' that scans installed formulae and dependencies for vulnerabilities by querying OSV.dev and cross-referencing with a Homebrew-specific advisory database. This database includes OSV-format records documenting vulnerabilities and backported fixes specific to Homebrew formula versions. Additionally, Homebrew 7.0.0 enhances sandboxing by blocking default access to home directories and separating network-enabled dependency downloads from offline installations. These features collectively strengthen security controls and improve installation performance through concurrent package handling.
