Description

This content is a write-up by a security researcher describing their approach to solving a pwn.college MITM challenge. The author overengineered the solution by manually managing TCP connections and sequence numbers instead of using the intended ARP spoofing and transparent forwarding method. The write-up includes technical details about the challenges faced, including an ACK sequence-space bug that disrupted the connection.

I overengineered a pwn.college MITM challenge and ended up managing TCP by hand

The intended solution was basically ARP spoofing + transparent forwarding + replacing echo with flag.

Instead, I terminated the client-facing TCP connection myself with Scapy, manually generated SYN-ACKs and tracked SEQ/ACK values, while using a separate kernel-managed connection to the real server.

I wrote up what went wrong, including an ACK sequence-space bug that completely broke the connection.

Technical Analysis

The author attempted to solve a pwn.college man-in-the-middle (MITM) challenge by manually handling TCP connections using Scapy, including generating SYN-ACK packets and tracking sequence and acknowledgment numbers. This approach replaced the simpler intended solution of ARP spoofing combined with transparent forwarding and echo replacement. The manual TCP management introduced complexity and an ACK sequence-space bug that broke the connection. The write-up documents the technical difficulties and lessons learned from this overengineered approach.

Potential Impact

There is no direct security impact or vulnerability disclosed in this write-up. It is a technical exploration and challenge solution rather than a report of a security flaw or exploit. No active threats or exploits are described.

Defensive Guidance

No mitigation is required as this is not a vulnerability or active threat. The write-up serves as an educational resource on TCP management complexities in MITM scenarios.
