Description

ImageMagick versions before 6.9.13-57 and 7.x before 7.1.2-32 have a type confusion vulnerability in the INFO, JSON, and YAML encoders. This flaw occurs when an internal method receives a pointer of an unexpected type during image writing in a compressed format. Exploitation can cause the process to crash with SIGABRT or SIGSEGV, resulting in denial of service.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-109282 describes a type confusion vulnerability in ImageMagick's INFO, JSON, and YAML encoders affecting versions prior to 6.9.13-57 and 7.x prior to 7.1.2-32. The vulnerability arises when an internal method handling image writing receives a pointer of an unexpected type, leading to memory corruption that triggers a process crash (SIGABRT or SIGSEGV). This results in a denial of service condition. The CVSS v3.1 base score is 2.5, reflecting low severity due to the requirement for local access with high attack complexity and low privileges, and no impact on confidentiality or integrity.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation causes the ImageMagick process to crash, resulting in denial of service. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity of data. The attack requires local access with low privileges and high complexity, limiting the risk.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in ImageMagick versions 6.9.13-57 and 7.1.2-32 and later. Users should upgrade to these or newer versions to remediate the vulnerability. No additional mitigations are indicated.
