Source: GCVE Database

Description

Apache Syncope contains an improper isolation or compartmentalization vulnerability that allows an administrator with sufficient entitlements to achieve remote code execution via the connector subsystem. This occurs through the capability of scripted connectors (REST and SQL) to run Groovy scripts. The vulnerability affects versions from 3.0.0-M0 through 3.0.16, 4.0.0-M0 through 4.0.6, and 4.1.0-M0 through 4.1.1. Upgrading to versions 4.0.7 or 4.1.2 mitigates this issue by hardening the Groovy security sandbox.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-53421 is an improper isolation or compartmentalization vulnerability in Apache Syncope's connector subsystem. An administrator with adequate entitlements can exploit the scripted connectors' ability to run Groovy scripts to achieve remote code execution. The issue affects Apache Syncope versions 3.0.0-M0 through 3.0.16, 4.0.0-M0 through 4.0.6, and 4.1.0-M0 through 4.1.1. The vulnerability is addressed in versions 4.0.7 and 4.1.2 by enhancing the Groovy security sandbox to prevent such exploitation.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows an administrator with sufficient privileges to execute arbitrary code remotely through the connector subsystem, potentially leading to full system compromise. The vulnerability impacts confidentiality, integrity, and availability, as indicated by the CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H).

Mitigation Recommendations

Users should upgrade Apache Syncope to version 4.0.7 or 4.1.2, where the vulnerability is fixed by hardening the Groovy security sandbox. No other mitigation or temporary workaround is indicated. Patch status is confirmed by the vendor advisory recommending these versions.
