A patch is available and should be applied to affected Linux kernel versions. The vendor advisory from Ubuntu confirms that this and other kernel vulnerabilities have been fixed. Systems running affected versions should be updated to the fixed kernel releases. No additional mitigations are specified or required beyond applying the official kernel updates.
Description
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's Btrfs file system was resolved involving improper handling after a state insertion failure in the btrfs_convert_extent_bit() function. If the insert_state() call fails, an error pointer is returned and extent_io_tree_panic() is called, which triggers a BUG() call. In the uncommon scenario where CONFIG_BUG is disabled, the code falls through and dereferences the error pointer, causing invalid memory access. This flaw could lead to a denial of service (system crash). A patch is available addressing this issue.
