Description

A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's memory management subsystem (swap_cgroup) was fixed to prevent a NULL pointer dereference on swapless hosts. The flaw occurs because lookup_swap_cgroup_id() does not verify that a swap type was registered before dereferencing a pointer, leading to a crash when a corrupted page table entry (PTE) is encountered. This can cause a denial of service by crashing the host during process exit. The issue affects certain versions of the linux-hwe-edge kernel and has been addressed in updated kernel packages.

Technical Analysis

The Linux kernel vulnerability CVE-2026-64416 involves a NULL pointer dereference in the swap_cgroup subsystem's lookup_swap_cgroup_id() function on swapless hosts. The function passes a pointer without checking if the swap type was registered, resulting in a NULL dereference and crash when a corrupted PTE is processed. This flaw can cause the host system to crash during process exit, as demonstrated in production on a swapless 6.12.58 kernel. The vulnerability has been resolved in linux-hwe-edge kernel versions 7.0.0 and later.

Potential Impact

This vulnerability can cause a denial of service by crashing the Linux host system when a corrupted swap entry is encountered in the page table. It does not impact confidentiality or integrity but results in availability loss due to system crashes. There is no indication of privilege escalation or code execution. The CVSS score is 5.5 (medium severity) with an attack vector of local, requiring low privileges and no user interaction.

Mitigation Recommendations

A patch is available and should be applied by updating to the fixed linux-hwe-edge kernel versions 7.0.0-31.31 and later as specified in the Ubuntu security advisories USN-8726-1 and USN-8727-1. After updating, a system reboot is required to apply the kernel fixes. Due to an ABI change, third-party kernel modules must be recompiled and reinstalled. No additional mitigation is required beyond applying the official kernel updates.
