Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: x86/mm: Fix SMP ordering in switch_mm_irqs_off() Stephen noted that it is possible to not have an smp_mb() between the loaded_mm store and the tlb_gen load in switch_mm(), meaning the ordering against flush_tlb_mm_range() goes out the window, and it becomes possible for switch_mm() to not observe a recent tlb_gen update and fail to flush the TLBs. Technical Analysis

CVE-2025-40174 addresses a vulnerability in the Linux kernel's x86 memory management code, specifically in the switch_mm_irqs_off() function. The problem arises because there is no smp_mb() memory barrier between the loaded_mm store and the tlb_gen load in switch_mm(), which breaks the ordering guarantees against flush_tlb_mm_range(). This can cause switch_mm() to miss recent tlb_gen updates, resulting in failure to flush the TLBs properly. Such a failure can lead to stale memory mappings being used, impacting system security and stability. The issue has been fixed by correcting the SMP ordering to ensure proper memory barriers are in place.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability can lead to failure in flushing the Translation Lookaside Buffers (TLBs), which may cause the system to use outdated memory mappings. This can result in high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the affected system. Attackers with local privileges might exploit this to cause memory corruption or information leakage. However, there are no known exploits in the wild at this time.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix for this vulnerability has been implemented in the Linux kernel. Users should apply the official kernel updates that include the corrected SMP ordering in switch_mm_irqs_off(). Since no cloud service is involved, system administrators must update their Linux kernel versions accordingly. Patch status is not explicitly confirmed in the provided data; therefore, check the vendor advisory or Linux kernel mailing lists for the specific fixed versions and apply updates promptly.
