In versions of netty-transport-sctp prior to 4.1.135.Final and 4.2.15.Final, for each non-complete SctpMessage fragment the handler does… (CVE-2026-46340)
Description
A vulnerability in netty-transport-sctp versions prior to 4.1.135.Final and 4.2.15.Final allows an attacker to cause unbounded memory growth by sending many incomplete SCTP message fragments. The handler accumulates fragments into a composite buffer chain without limits, which can grow indefinitely if the 'complete' flag is never set. This can lead to denial of service due to resource exhaustion. Versions 4.1.135.Final and 4.2.15.Final include patches for this issue.

Technical Analysis
Netty-transport-sctp prior to versions 4.1.135.Final and 4.2.15.Final contains a vulnerability where the handler for SCTP message fragments accumulates non-complete fragments by wrapping previous accumulators and new slices into a new CompositeByteBuf each time. This creates an unbounded chain of composite buffers, each holding references and component arrays. There is no limit on the number of fragments, total bytes, or stream identifiers an attacker can open, allowing indefinite growth of this structure from small data chunks if the peer never sets the 'complete' flag. This can cause excessive memory consumption and potential denial of service. The issue is patched in versions 4.1.135.Final and 4.2.15.Final.
Potential Impact
The vulnerability allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to cause a denial of service by exhausting memory resources through sending many incomplete SCTP message fragments. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity. The attack can lead to application or system instability due to resource exhaustion.
Mitigation Recommendations
A fix is available in netty-transport-sctp versions 4.1.135.Final and 4.2.15.Final. Users should upgrade to these or later versions to remediate the issue. No other specific mitigations are indicated.
