Description

Incorrect Authorization (CWE-863) in Kibana can lead to privilege escalation via Input Data Manipulation (CAPEC-153). Elasticsearch cluster privilege declarations originating from integration packages were not validated before being used to mint credentials for enrolled Elastic Agents. A user holding Fleet management privileges could therefore cause every Elastic Agent on a targeted policy to receive a credential carrying arbitrarily elevated Elasticsearch cluster privileges, up to and including full cluster administration.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability arises from improper validation of Elasticsearch cluster privilege declarations originating from integration packages before they are used to mint credentials for enrolled Elastic Agents. A user holding Fleet management privileges can exploit this flaw to cause every Elastic Agent on a targeted policy to receive credentials with arbitrarily elevated cluster privileges, including full cluster administration rights. The vulnerability is classified as CWE-863 (Incorrect Authorization) and involves input data manipulation (CAPEC-153). The CVSS v3.1 base score is 8.1, indicating high severity.

Potential Impact

An attacker with Fleet management privileges can escalate their privileges by manipulating input data to grant Elastic Agents elevated Elasticsearch cluster privileges. This could lead to unauthorized full cluster administration, compromising confidentiality and integrity of the Elasticsearch cluster. Availability impact is not indicated.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, restrict Fleet management privileges to trusted users only and monitor for suspicious activity related to credential minting for Elastic Agents.
