Technical Analysis
CVE-2026-96542 describes a privilege escalation vulnerability due to incorrect permission assignment (CWE-732) in the standalone installer for EA Javelin Anticheat on Windows. A local non-administrative user can exploit this by modifying the EAAntiCheatService service configuration and executable path, gaining SYSTEM-level privileges. This requires manual, non-standard execution of the standalone installer and does not impact installations through EA App or Steam. The vulnerability is resolved in version 1.0.14940699 and later, where service permissions automatically self-heal upon launching an integrated EA game.
Potential Impact
A local attacker with limited privileges can escalate to SYSTEM privileges by exploiting the incorrect permission assignment in the standalone installer. This could lead to high confidentiality impact due to elevated access, with limited integrity impact and no availability impact as per the CVSS vector. The vulnerability is limited to manual installer execution and does not affect standard game installations.
Mitigation Recommendations
Upgrade to EA Javelin Anticheat version 1.0.14940699 or later, where the vulnerability is fixed. Additionally, launching an integrated EA game title causes the service permissions to self-heal automatically. Avoid using the standalone installer manually to reduce exposure.
