Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-86246 describes an initialization vulnerability in Apache Tomcat Native where insecure default options are enabled. These insecure options potentially weaken the security of TLS connections by allowing client renegotiation, disabling extended master secret enforcement, ignoring unexpected EOFs, and allowing no DHE key exchange. The vulnerability affects Apache Tomcat Native versions from 2.0.0 through 2.0.15 and 1.3.0 through 1.3.8. The vendor has addressed the issue in versions 2.0.16 and 1.3.9.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability has a high impact on confidentiality and integrity (CVSS 9.1) because insecure default options can allow attackers to weaken TLS security, potentially enabling man-in-the-middle attacks or other cryptographic attacks. Availability is not impacted. No known exploits are reported in the wild at this time.

Mitigation Recommendations

Users should upgrade Apache Tomcat Native to version 2.0.16 or 1.3.9 or later to remediate this vulnerability. These versions disable the insecure default options. No other mitigation is indicated by the vendor.
