Description

Attackers can move from access to exfiltration in 72 minutes. Learn how modern SOC teams close the speed gap with Unit 42's AI-driven automation, threat hunting, MDR and Managed XSIAM. The post Inside the Modern SOC: The 72-Minute Race appeared first on Unit 42 .

Impact

The accelerated attack timelines enable adversaries to achieve objectives such as data exfiltration within hours or even minutes after initial access, increasing the risk of significant business impact before detection and response. Identity-driven attacks facilitate rapid privilege escalation and lateral movement, potentially compromising multiple systems and cloud resources. Without automated correlation and integrated workflows, security teams may miss or delay response to critical incidents, increasing exposure to data loss and operational disruption.

Defensive guidance

While no specific patch or vulnerability fix applies, Unit 42 recommends SOC modernization to close the speed gap. This includes adopting AI-driven automation for alert correlation and enrichment, shifting from sequential manual triage to parallel automated workflows, and operationalizing predefined containment actions for common attack scenarios such as compromised accounts and privilege escalation. Prioritizing behavioral indicators over static signatures and integrating signals across identity, endpoint, cloud, and network sources are key to improving detection and response velocity. Organizations should consider leveraging platforms like Cortex XSIAM and Managed Detection and Response services to implement these capabilities.

Summary

Unit 42's analysis reveals that attackers have dramatically accelerated their attack lifecycle, moving from initial access to confirmed data exfiltration in as little as 72 minutes, a fourfold increase in speed year-over-year. The predominant attack vector involves identity-based tactics including compromised credentials, MFA manipulation, and rapid privilege escalation. Attackers pivot quickly across identity, endpoint, cloud, and SaaS environments to establish persistence and exfiltrate data. Traditional SOC processes that depend on manual alert triage and fragmented workflows are insufficient to keep pace. Unit 42 advocates for SOC modernization using AI-driven correlation, automated enrichment, and predefined containment workflows to enable real-time detection and response, thereby reducing investigation and response times.
