Source: GCVE Database
Product: postgresql

Description

An integer wraparound vulnerability in PostgreSQL's fuzzystrmatch module allows attackers to write to arbitrary memory addresses. This occurs via specially crafted inputs to the levenshtein() or levenshtein_less_equal() SQL functions. Successful exploitation can lead to arbitrary code execution with the privileges of the database operating system user. Versions prior to PostgreSQL 14.24, 15.19, 16.15, 17.11, and 18.6 are affected. A patch is available to address this issue.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-15742 is an integer wraparound vulnerability in the fuzzystrmatch extension of PostgreSQL. By providing extreme inputs to the levenshtein() or levenshtein_less_equal() functions, an attacker can cause integer wraparound that results in writes to a wide range of memory addresses. This memory corruption can be leveraged to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the OS user running the database process. The vulnerability affects multiple PostgreSQL major versions before 14.24, 15.19, 16.15, 17.11, and 18.6. The issue is tracked under CWE-190 (Integer Overflow or Wraparound).

Potential Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability allows an attacker with the ability to invoke the vulnerable SQL functions to execute arbitrary code on the host operating system with the same privileges as the PostgreSQL server process. This can lead to full compromise of the database server environment. There are no known exploits in the wild at this time.

Mitigation Recommendations

A patch is available for this vulnerability. Users should upgrade PostgreSQL to versions 14.24, 15.19, 16.15, 17.11, 18.6 or later to remediate this issue. No alternative mitigations or workarounds are indicated in the advisory.
