Io.netty:netty codec http: Netty: [SpdyHttpDecoder] ByteBuf Reference Leak on RST_STREAM Leads to Native Memory Exhaustion (CVE-2026-56745)

Published: 07/22/2026 (07/22/2026, 21:32:24 UTC)
Source: GCVE Database
Product: io.netty:netty-codec-http

Description

A vulnerability in the SpdyHttpDecoder handler of Netty's SPDY-to-HTTP codec causes a pooled ByteBuf memory leak when processing client-initiated SYN_STREAM frames. Specifically, when an RST_STREAM frame is received or the content length exceeds a limit, the allocated ByteBuf is removed from internal tracking but not released, leading to native memory exhaustion.

Technical Analysis

The SpdyHttpDecoder in io.netty:netty-codec-http allocates pooled ByteBuf objects to accumulate HTTP request data from SPDY SYN_STREAM frames. If the remote peer sends an RST_STREAM frame or the content length surpasses maxContentLength, the decoder removes the associated entry from its internal messageMap but fails to release the pooled ByteBuf. This results in a permanent native memory leak, potentially exhausting system memory resources. The vulnerability is identified as CVE-2026-56745 and is categorized under CWE-400 (Uncontrolled Resource Consumption). No patch or remediation information is currently available.

Potential Impact

This vulnerability can cause native memory exhaustion on systems running affected versions of Netty's SPDY-to-HTTP codec, potentially leading to denial of service due to resource depletion. There is no indication of privilege escalation or data confidentiality impact. No known exploits are reported in the wild.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, users should monitor memory usage and consider mitigating exposure to untrusted SPDY traffic if feasible.
