Description

Kyverno versions v1.9.0 through v1.12.7 have a policy exception handling flaw that allows an attacker to bypass enforcement policies by exploiting how multiple PolicyExceptions are prioritized. This flaw permits the less restrictive exception to override the more restrictive one, enabling circumvention of policies such as those blocking hostPath volumes. The issue is fixed in version v1.13.0.

Technical Analysis

Kyverno versions v1.9.0 through v1.12.7 contain a vulnerability in policy exception handling. When a policy is in enforce mode with two PolicyExceptions, the less restrictive exception takes precedence, allowing an attacker to bypass the policy by crafting a resource name matching the second exception's pattern (e.g., '*ingress*'). This flaw can be exploited to circumvent security policies like those blocking hostPath volumes. The vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2026-84200 and has a CVSS 3.1 score of 9.0, indicating critical severity. The issue is resolved in Kyverno version v1.13.0.

Potential Impact

An attacker with low privileges can bypass Kyverno enforcement policies by exploiting the exception handling flaw, potentially allowing unauthorized resource creation or modification that violates intended security policies. This can lead to full compromise of confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the affected system components governed by Kyverno policies.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade Kyverno to version v1.13.0 or later, where this policy exception handling flaw is fixed. No other mitigations are indicated or required once the fixed version is deployed.
