Malicious code in roles-royce (PyPI)

0
Critical
Published: 07/20/2026 (07/20/2026, 17:53:19 UTC)
Source: GCVE Database
Product: roles-royce

Description

The roles-royce PyPI package version 2.1.1 contains malicious code that executes at import time. It runs a hidden routine that collects sensitive files such as SSH private keys, cloud credentials, wallet keystores, shell histories, and environment files from the user's system. The stolen data, along with environment variables and Kubernetes service account tokens, is compressed, encoded, and exfiltrated to two hardcoded IP addresses. This malicious behavior is disguised as a compatibility check and is unrelated to the package's advertised functionality as a Zodiac Roles transaction builder.

Technical Analysis

The roles-royce package version 2.1.1 includes a hidden _check_env() function triggered on import, which spawns a background thread to harvest a wide range of sensitive files and environment data from the host system. It targets SSH keys, cloud service credentials, wallet keystores, shell histories, and Kubernetes tokens. The collected data is zipped, base64-encoded, and sent via HTTP POST to two hardcoded IPv4 addresses (185.158.107.189:8877 and 151.247.22.13:8877). The exfiltration mechanism uses obfuscated code with integer tuples representing IP addresses and disguises the operation as a runtime compatibility check. This behavior is unrelated to the package's stated purpose and represents a severe supply chain compromise.

Potential Impact

This malicious package can lead to significant data theft, including private keys, cloud credentials, wallet keystores, and Kubernetes tokens, potentially allowing attackers to gain unauthorized access to cloud resources, source code repositories, cryptographic assets, and containerized environments. The compromise of these secrets can result in further system breaches, data loss, and financial theft. Because the exfiltration occurs silently at import time, users may be unaware of the compromise.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official patch or remediation is currently documented for this package version. Users should immediately uninstall roles-royce version 2.1.1 and avoid using this package from untrusted sources. Verify the integrity of installed packages and monitor for suspicious network activity to the indicated IP addresses. Consider rotating any potentially exposed credentials and keys. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory or PyPI security notices for updates.
