AI-suggested

Upgrade Authlib to version 2.15.0_5 or later, where empty HMAC keys are explicitly rejected. Ensure that the verification key source cannot be empty or unset at runtime to prevent fallback to an empty key. No other mitigations are necessary if the patch is applied.

Description

Authlib versions up to 1.7.2 accept an empty HMAC key for JWS/JWT signature verification using HS256, HS384, and HS512 algorithms. This allows an attacker to forge tokens with arbitrary claims that pass signature verification if the application verifies tokens with an empty key. The vulnerability arises because the library does not reject zero-length keys, resulting in a deterministic, publicly reproducible HMAC digest. This flaw can lead to token forgery and authentication bypass in OAuth 2.0 resource servers and OIDC relying parties using Authlib. A fix is available in version 2.15.0_5.
