[MEGATHREAD] October 2026 Cybersecurity Incidents: PHP2Shell, LiteLLM, eMudhra, GitLab, and more
Description
In October 2026, critical remote code execution vulnerabilities (CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619) were discovered in PHP affecting multiple supported versions. These vulnerabilities allow unauthenticated attackers to execute code remotely due to out-of-memory corruption and stale global state issues. Emergency security updates were released on October 21, 2026, for PHP versions 8.2.35, 8.3.36, 8.4.27, and 8.5.12. Mitigations exist but are incomplete; updating to the fixed versions is strongly recommended. Additional incidents involving LiteLLM, eMudhra, GitLab, Railway, and Zeabur were also reported in the same timeframe. The PHP project continues to address these issues with further advisories and release candidates.

[MEGATHREAD] PHP2Shell (CVE-2026-109618/109619), LiteLLM, eMudhra, GitLab & Other October Security Incidents AKA Black October
We've been getting hammered with posts and questions about the wave of vulnerabilities, compromises, and other security incidents over the past week. A lot are duplicative, and there is a wave of vibe coded crap getting shared that doesn't really do much in this situation. Rather than having a 3 dozen threads covering the same thing, we're going to consolidate the general discussion.
There's a lot happening, and some of it more serious than others. There's also a fair amount of speculation and outright BS getting mixed in with legitimate reporting.
For anyone trying to catch up, here are the most significant incidents / vulns and links to official sources. We'll add more as needed.
What's going on?
PHP2Shell (CVE-2026-109618 / CVE-2026-109619)
Critical PHP vulnerabilities with reported exploitation attempts predating public disclosure. Emergency security updates were released October 21.
LiteLLM supply chain compromise
Malicious packages published through PyPI and container registries. Potential credential theft and remote code execution.
eMudhra certificate authority compromise
Compromised certificate infrastructure created the potential for forged trusted certificates. Google and Mozilla have both published responses.
GitLab critical vulnerabilities
Emergency security updates for affected self-managed GitLab installations.
Railway and Zeabur security incidents
Both platforms have disclosed security incidents affecting their infrastructure and services.

A few things worth mentioning
If you have new research, technical findings, or a significant development, feel free to create a separate post. Otherwise, please keep chatter and questions here.
Please link original sources when possible. We're particularly interested in technical findings, incident reports, and official advisories rather than another article summarizing someone else's reporting.
If we've missed something significant, drop it in the comments with a source and we'll update the thread.

Technical Analysis
Two critical PHP vulnerabilities (CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619) allow unauthenticated remote code execution. CVE-2026-109618 involves out-of-memory handling that can interrupt PHP while internal request data is partially initialized, leading to request cleanup treating invalid data as valid. CVE-2026-109619 involves stale global state where request-owned internal state survives after memory is freed, allowing subsequent requests to use stale data before initialization. These affect PHP installations serving web requests, including PHP-FPM, mod_php, php-cgi, FrankenPHP, and LiteSpeed, with the highest risk on mod_php. Emergency updates were released for PHP 8.2.35, 8.3.36, 8.4.27, and 8.5.12. Partial mitigations include configuration changes like disabling session.upload_progress and adjusting memory limits, but only updating fully resolves the issue. The PHP project also provided minimal backports for older versions and is preparing a full advisory for a related issue (CVE-2026-115560). Other significant cybersecurity incidents in October 2026 include supply chain compromises in LiteLLM, certificate authority compromise at eMudhra, and critical vulnerabilities in GitLab, with official advisories and responses published by respective vendors and organizations.
Potential Impact
These vulnerabilities allow unauthenticated remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected PHP installations, potentially compromising web servers before any application code runs. The risk is highest for mod_php configurations, where exploitation has been demonstrated. This can lead to full server compromise, data theft, or further network intrusion. The vulnerabilities affect all PHP installations serving web requests across multiple PHP versions. Other related incidents in October 2026 include supply chain compromises and certificate authority breaches, which pose additional risks to trust and security in affected ecosystems.
Mitigation Recommendations
A complete fix is available by updating PHP to versions 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36, or 8.2.35. All users are strongly encouraged to update immediately. Partial mitigations include setting session.upload_progress.enabled=0, adjusting memory_limit to -1 to avoid controllable memory limit failures, setting low post_max_size and upload_max_filesize values, and enforcing request size limits at the server or proxy level. These mitigations reduce exposure but do not fully protect against exploitation. For older PHP versions (7.4, 8.0, 8.1), minimal backports are available from the PHP security team, but upgrading to supported versions is recommended. Users should monitor vendor advisories for further updates and the forthcoming advisory for CVE-2026-115560. No action is required beyond updating for other incidents mentioned, but users should consult official advisories for those separately.
