Description

MISP contains a cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the ID Translator feature affecting versions prior to 2.5.48. This vulnerability arises because event IDs returned from linked remote MISP servers are rendered without proper output encoding. An attacker controlling or compromising a linked server could inject malicious HTML or JavaScript that executes in the browser of authenticated users viewing the ID Translator page. Exploitation requires an authenticated user, a configured linked server, and navigation to the vulnerable page.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in MISP's ID Translator feature allows a linked remote server to return event IDs containing arbitrary HTML or JavaScript markup. These are rendered directly in the host MISP instance's ID Translator page without proper output encoding, leading to a stored reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability. This can enable client-side attacks such as session hijacking or credential theft for authenticated users who visit the affected page. The issue affects versions prior to 2.5.48.

Potential Impact

An attacker controlling or compromising a linked MISP server can inject malicious scripts that execute in the browsers of authenticated users of the host MISP instance. This can lead to session hijacking, credential theft, or other client-side attacks. The vulnerability requires user interaction (visiting the ID Translator page) and a linked server configured on the host instance.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, restrict access to trusted linked servers only and limit user access to the ID Translator feature. Monitor vendor communications for patches or updates addressing this vulnerability.
