Description

MONAI versions prior to 1.5.2 contain a vulnerability in the algo_from_pickle function that allows deserialization of untrusted data. This function reads a .pkl file and directly passes its contents to pickle.loads without validating the source or content. An attacker supplying a crafted pickle file can trigger arbitrary code execution during deserialization.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in MONAI before version 1.5.2 exists in the algo_from_pickle function located in monai/auto3dseg/utils.py. This function deserializes data from a .pkl file using pickle.loads without verifying the trustworthiness of the data source. Because pickle deserialization can invoke the __reduce__ method of objects, an attacker-controlled pickle file can execute arbitrary code within the application context. This is classified as CWE-502 (Deserialization of Untrusted Data).

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows an attacker with the ability to supply a malicious pickle file to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the application using the vulnerable function. This can lead to full compromise of the affected system, including confidentiality, integrity, and availability impacts.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in MONAI version 1.5.2 and later. Users should upgrade to version 1.5.2 or newer to remediate this vulnerability. Until upgraded, avoid invoking algo_from_pickle on untrusted or attacker-controlled pickle files.
