A fix for this vulnerability is available and was applied in a specific commit after version 0.96. Users should upgrade to a fixed version of mtr to remediate this issue.

Description

CVE-2026-14461 is an out-of-bound read vulnerability in the mtr utility's ipinfo_lookup() function. It is triggered by a maliciously crafted TXT DNS response used for AS lookups that exceeds 512 bytes and contains a crafted compression pointer in the answer NAME field. This causes a crash due to improper boundary handling in the dn_expand() function. The issue affects mtr versions through 0.96 and has been fixed in a later commit.
