Node compression: compression is a Node.js and Express compression middleware. (CVE-2026-87776)
Description
The Node.js compression middleware (compression) versions before 1.8.2 have a vulnerability where aborted client connections during compressed responses cause native zlib memory leaks. This can be exploited by a remote unauthenticated attacker to exhaust server memory and cause a crash. The issue is fixed in version 1.8.2, and users should upgrade to this or later versions.

Technical Analysis
The compression middleware for Node.js and Express versions prior to 1.8.2 improperly handle client connection aborts during compressed responses. Specifically, the zlib stream used for compression is not destroyed when a client disconnects early, leading to native memory leaks. An attacker can exploit this by repeatedly initiating requests and disconnecting prematurely, causing memory exhaustion and server crashes. This affects all applications using the vulnerable compression versions. The vulnerability is addressed in compression version 1.8.2.
Potential Impact
A remote unauthenticated attacker can cause a denial of service by exhausting server memory through repeated aborted requests, leading to server crashes. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity, only availability is affected.
Mitigation Recommendations
Upgrade the compression middleware to version 1.8.2 or later, where this issue is fixed. No other mitigations are indicated by the vendor advisory.
