Openclaw cli: OpenClaw affected by denial of service via unbounded webhook request body buffering (CVE-2026-28478)

Published: 08/13/2026 (08/13/2026, 17:21:32 UTC)
Source: GCVE Database
Product: openclaw-cli

Description

OpenClaw CLI versions from 2026.1.29 up to but not including 2026.2.13 contain a vulnerability where multiple webhook handlers accept and buffer request bodies without strict unified byte or time limits. This allows a remote unauthenticated attacker to send oversized payloads, causing memory pressure and degrading service availability, resulting in a denial of service (DoS). A patch is available that adds bounded request-body handling and stream guards to mitigate this issue.

Technical Analysis

OpenClaw CLI's webhook handlers lacked consistent enforcement of maximum request body size and timeout limits, allowing remote unauthenticated attackers to send very large or slow/incomplete JSON payloads to webhook endpoints. This leads to excessive memory consumption and request handler pressure, causing denial of service. The vulnerability affects openclaw versions >=2026.1.29 and <2026.2.13 and clawdbot versions <=2026.1.24-3. The patch introduces a shared bounded request-body helper, stream guards for SDK handlers, explicit JSON body limits for certain webhook paths, and standardized failure responses such as 413 Payload Too Large and 408 Request Timeout.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability enables remote unauthenticated attackers to cause denial of service by exhausting memory resources through unbounded buffering of webhook request bodies. This degrades availability of the affected services but does not impact confidentiality or integrity.

Mitigation Recommendations

A patch is available and has been implemented in openclaw CLI versions starting from 2026.2.13. Users should upgrade to this or later versions to remediate the vulnerability. The patch adds strict limits on request body size and processing time, preventing memory exhaustion. No additional mitigation is required if the patch is applied.
