Openclaw cli: OpenClaw affected by potential code execution via unsafe hook module path handling in Gateway (CVE-2026-28456)

Published: 08/13/2026 (08/13/2026, 17:21:32 UTC)
Source: GCVE Database
Product: openclaw-cli

Description

OpenClaw Gateway versions from 2026.1.29 up to 2026.2.13 contain a vulnerability where unsafe handling of hook module paths allows an attacker with configuration modification privileges to execute arbitrary code. This occurs because the gateway does not sufficiently restrict module paths before dynamically importing them. The vulnerability is patched in version 2026.2.14. Users should upgrade to the fixed version and avoid exposing configuration endpoints to untrusted networks.

Technical Analysis

OpenClaw Gateway supports hook mappings with optional JavaScript/TypeScript transform modules. In affected versions (>=2026.1.29 <2026.2.14), the gateway fails to properly constrain configured module paths before passing them to dynamic import(), which can allow a user with the ability to modify gateway configuration to cause the gateway process to load and execute unintended local modules. This leads to potential code execution within the Node.js process running the gateway.

Potential Impact

An attacker who has high-privilege access to modify the gateway configuration (e.g., via configuration endpoints) can exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code in the OpenClaw gateway Node.js process. This could lead to full compromise of the gateway process and potentially the host system.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in OpenClaw version 2026.2.14 and later. Users should upgrade to this version or newer. Additionally, avoid exposing gateway configuration endpoints to untrusted networks and review configuration values for unsafe module paths in hooks.mappings[].transform.module and hooks.internal.handlers[].module to prevent exploitation.
