Openclaw cli: OpenClaw: Assistant media route missed scope enforcement for trusted-proxy authorization (CVE-2026-41908)
Description
OpenClaw CLI versions before 2026.4.20 contain a vulnerability in the assistant-media route where trusted-proxy callers were authenticated but the enforcement of operator scopes was missing. This allowed callers without the required operator.read scope to access assistant-media files and metadata within allowed media roots. The route still required gateway authentication and media-root checks, limiting the impact. The issue is fixed in version 2026.4.20.

Technical Analysis
The OpenClaw CLI's assistant-media route authenticated trusted-proxy callers but failed to enforce the declared operator.read scope on identity-bearing HTTP authentication paths. As a result, a trusted-proxy caller lacking operator.read permission could access assistant-media files and metadata that should have been restricted within allowed media roots. The route still required successful gateway authentication and media-root validation, which mitigated the severity. The vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2026-41908 with a CVSS 3.1 base score of 4.3 (medium severity). The issue was fixed in OpenClaw version 2026.4.20 by requiring operator.read scope for assistant-media file and metadata requests.
Potential Impact
An attacker with trusted-proxy authentication but without the operator.read scope could access assistant-media files and metadata that should have been restricted. However, successful gateway authentication and media-root checks were still required, limiting the potential unauthorized access. The confidentiality impact is low, with no integrity or availability impacts reported.
Mitigation Recommendations
Upgrade OpenClaw CLI to version 2026.4.20 or later, where the vulnerability is fixed by enforcing the operator.read scope on assistant-media file and metadata requests. Since a patch is available, applying this official fix is the recommended remediation.
