Product: openclaw-cli

Description

OpenClaw CLI's browser navigation guard allowed authenticated users to navigate to non-network URL schemes such as file://, enabling them to access local files readable by the OpenClaw process user. This vulnerability affects versions up to 2026.2.19-2 and is patched in the upcoming 2026.2.21 release. Exploitation requires authenticated access to the gateway with browser tooling enabled. The vulnerability has a CVSS score of 6.5 (medium severity).

Technical Analysis

The OpenClaw CLI browser navigation guard function `assertBrowserNavigationAllowed()` validated only http: and https: URL schemes, implicitly permitting other schemes such as file://. An authenticated user with access to browser tooling could navigate browser sessions to file:// URLs and extract local file contents via browser snapshot or extraction features. This allows exfiltration of local files readable by the OpenClaw process user, such as configuration or secret files. The vulnerability affects openclaw versions up to 2026.2.19-2 and is addressed by rejecting unsupported navigation schemes in the upcoming 2026.2.21 release.

Potential Impact

An attacker with valid credentials and browser-tool access can read local files on the system where OpenClaw runs, potentially exposing sensitive configuration or secret data accessible to the OpenClaw process user. This leads to confidentiality loss but does not impact integrity or availability.

Mitigation Recommendations

A patch is available and planned for release in version 2026.2.21, which blocks non-network URL schemes such as file:, data:, and javascript: while allowing only explicitly safe URLs like about:blank. Users should upgrade to version 2026.2.21 once published to remediate this vulnerability.
