Description

OpenClaw CLI versions up to 2026.4.7 have a vulnerability in the device.token.rotate function that allows minting tokens for unapproved roles, bypassing the intended device role-upgrade pairing process. This flaw could result in tokens preserving or granting roles/scopes without proper approval. The issue affects the OpenClaw user-controlled local assistant and does not involve multi-tenant service boundaries. A patch is available in version 2026.4.8.

Technical Analysis

The OpenClaw CLI's device.token.rotate function improperly mints tokens for roles that have not undergone the required pairing approval, effectively bypassing the device role-upgrade pairing security boundary. This can lead to unauthorized role assignments within the token. The vulnerability affects openclaw npm package versions from 2026.1.29 up to but not including 2026.4.8. The issue was fixed in commit d7c3210cd6f5fdfdc1beff4c9541673e814354d5 and released in version 2026.4.8. Verification included regression tests targeting the affected security boundary.

Potential Impact

An attacker with the ability to invoke device.token.rotate could obtain tokens with unauthorized roles or scopes, potentially leading to elevated privileges or unauthorized access within the OpenClaw environment. The vulnerability impacts confidentiality, integrity, and availability as indicated by the CVSS score of 8.8 (high severity).

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade to openclaw npm package version 2026.4.8 or later, which contains the official fix for this vulnerability. The fix has been verified with regression tests. No additional mitigation actions are required beyond applying the patch.
