Openclaw cli: OpenClaw: Discord allowFrom could bind to mutable display names (CVE-2026-53849)
Description
A vulnerability in OpenClaw CLI's Discord allowFrom feature allows binding to mutable display names. This can cause a Discord account that can change display or global name metadata to match a policy entry incorrectly. The issue affects versions from 2026.1.29 up to but not including 2026.5.7. The vulnerability could allow an attacker to receive agent access intended for another Discord identity, depending on configuration. A patch is available in version 2026.5.7. Until patched, using stable Discord user IDs in allowlists is recommended, along with narrowing allowlists and disabling the feature if not needed.

Technical Analysis
The OpenClaw CLI Discord allowFrom feature binds policy entries to Discord display names, which are mutable. This allows a Discord account capable of changing display or global name metadata to match a policy entry through these mutable identifiers, potentially receiving access intended for another Discord identity. The vulnerability does not affect the trusted-operator model of OpenClaw but depends on operator configuration and feature enablement. Versions >=2026.1.29 and <2026.5.7 are affected. The issue is fixed in version 2026.5.7.
Potential Impact
If the affected feature is enabled and accessible, an attacker controlling a Discord account that can change display or global names may gain agent access intended for a different Discord identity. The impact depends on the operator's configuration and whether lower-trust input can reach the vulnerable path. Confidentiality and integrity of agent access could be compromised. There is no indication of availability impact or known exploits in the wild.
Mitigation Recommendations
A patch is available in OpenClaw CLI version 2026.5.7. Operators should upgrade to this version to remediate the vulnerability. Until patched, use stable Discord user IDs in allowlists instead of display names. Additionally, narrow channel and tool allowlists, avoid sharing one Gateway between mutually untrusted users, and disable the affected feature if it is not needed.
