Description

The OpenClaw CLI vulnerability (CVE-2026-40037) involves the `fetchWithSsrFGuard` function replaying unsafe request bodies across cross-origin redirects. This could cause guarded fetch operations to resend unsafe request bodies or headers when following redirects to different origins. The issue affects the openclaw npm package versions from 2026.1.29 up to but not including 2026.4.8. A patch is available in version 2026.4.8 that fixes this behavior.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-40037 is a vulnerability in the openclaw npm package where the `fetchWithSsrFGuard` function improperly replays unsafe request bodies and headers during cross-origin redirects. This behavior violates the intended security boundary within the OpenClaw trust model, potentially exposing sensitive data during redirect handling. The vulnerability is scoped to the OpenClaw local assistant environment and does not assume a multi-tenant service context. The issue was fixed in commit d7c3210cd6f5fdfdc1beff4c9541673e814354d5 and released in openclaw version 2026.4.8.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows unsafe request bodies and headers to be resent across cross-origin redirects, which could lead to unintended data exposure or leakage within the context of the OpenClaw local assistant. Since the trust model is user-controlled and not multi-tenant, the impact is limited to the local environment where OpenClaw is used. There are no known exploits in the wild.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available and has been released in openclaw version 2026.4.8. Users should upgrade to this version or later to remediate the vulnerability. The fix has been verified with regression tests to ensure the security boundary is enforced correctly.
