Openclaw cli: OpenClaw: Gateway agent /reset exposes admin session reset to operator.write callers (CVE-2026-35660)

Published: 08/13/2026 (08/13/2026, 17:21:32 UTC)
Source: GCVE Database
Product: openclaw-cli

Description

A vulnerability in the openclaw CLI prior to version 2026.3.23 allowed callers with only operator.write privileges to reset admin sessions via the Gateway agent's /reset and /new RPC endpoints. This bypassed the intended operator.admin requirement enforced by the direct sessions.reset RPC. The issue was fixed in version 2026.3.23 by enforcing the operator.admin guard on these agent RPC calls.

Technical Analysis

Before version 2026.3.23, the openclaw CLI's Gateway agent RPC accepted /reset and /new commands from callers with operator.write privileges, allowing them to reset admin sessions. This was due to a missing operator.admin permission check in the performGatewaySessionReset function invoked by these RPCs, unlike the direct sessions.reset RPC which correctly required operator.admin. The vulnerability was addressed by adding the operator.admin requirement to the agent RPC handlers in commit 50f6a2f136fed85b58548a38f7a3dbb98d2cd1a0, included in versions 2026.3.23 and later.

Potential Impact

An attacker or user with operator.write privileges could reset admin sessions via the Gateway agent RPC, potentially disrupting administrative session management. This could lead to denial of service or unauthorized session control actions. However, the vulnerability does not allow privilege escalation beyond operator.write rights.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade openclaw CLI to version 2026.3.23 or later, which includes the fix enforcing operator.admin permissions on the /reset and /new Gateway agent RPC calls. No additional mitigation is required as the fix is included in the latest released versions.
