Openclaw cli: OpenClaw gateway agents.files symlink escape allowed out-of-workspace file read/write (CVE-2026-32013)
Description
OpenClaw CLI versions up to 2026.2.24 contain a vulnerability in the gateway agents.files.get and agents.files.set methods that allows symlink traversal. This flaw permits reading and writing files outside the intended workspace by following symlinks, potentially enabling arbitrary host file access within the gateway process permissions. The vulnerability is patched in version 2026.2.25, which enforces path containment and rejects out-of-workspace symlink targets.

Technical Analysis
The OpenClaw CLI gateway methods agents.files.get and agents.files.set allowed symlink traversal for allowlisted workspace files. A symlinked allowlisted file could resolve to a location outside the agent workspace, enabling the gateway process to read or write arbitrary host files. This vulnerability could lead to arbitrary file read/write on the host system with the gateway process permissions, and potentially code execution if critical files are overwritten. The issue affects openclaw versions >=2026.1.29 and <2026.2.25. The patch in version 2026.2.25 resolves real workspace paths, enforces containment to prevent out-of-workspace symlink targets, and maintains support for in-workspace symlinks.
Potential Impact
An attacker able to leverage this vulnerability can read and write arbitrary files on the host system within the gateway process permissions. This can lead to data disclosure, data modification, and potentially code execution depending on which files are overwritten. The CVSS score is 8.8 (high severity) indicating a significant impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
Mitigation Recommendations
A patch is available in OpenClaw CLI version 2026.2.25 and later. Users should upgrade to version 2026.2.25 or newer to mitigate this vulnerability. The patch enforces real path resolution and containment checks to block symlink escapes outside the workspace. No additional mitigations are required if the patch is applied.
