Openclaw cli: OpenClaw: Gateway Backend Reconnect lets Non-Admin Operator Scopes Self-Claim operator.admin (CVE-2026-35663)

Source: GCVE Database
Product: openclaw-cli

Description

A vulnerability in openclaw-cli versions from 2026.1.29 up to but not including 2026.3.28 allows non-admin operator scopes to self-claim the operator.admin scope via Gateway Backend Reconnect. This occurs because backend-labeled reconnects could bypass pairing and request broader scopes than authorized. The issue is fixed in version 2026.3.25 by requiring pairing when requested scopes exceed the approved baseline.

Technical Analysis

The openclaw-cli package versions >=2026.1.29 and <2026.3.28 are vulnerable to a privilege escalation vulnerability (CVE-2026-35663) where non-admin operator scopes can self-claim the operator.admin scope through Gateway Backend Reconnect. This happens because backend-labeled reconnects previously allowed self-requesting broader scopes without pairing verification. The vulnerability was fixed by commit d3d8e316bd819d3c7e34253aeb7eccb2510f5f48, which removes the backend self-pairing skip and enforces pairing when requested scopes exceed the approved baseline.

Potential Impact

An attacker with non-admin operator scope privileges can escalate their privileges to operator.admin by exploiting the backend reconnect mechanism, potentially gaining unauthorized administrative access. This could lead to unauthorized control over the system functions restricted to admin operators.

Mitigation Recommendations

A patch is available and should be applied. The vulnerability is fixed starting from version 2026.3.25. Users should upgrade to this version or later to mitigate the issue. No additional mitigation steps are indicated by the vendor advisory.
