Openclaw cli: OpenClaw: Gateway chat.send ACP-only provenance guard could be bypassed by client identity spoofing (CVE-2026-41299)
Description
OpenClaw CLI had a vulnerability in its chat.send gateway where ACP-only provenance fields were controlled by self-declared client metadata from the WebSocket handshake instead of verified authorization. This allowed authenticated operator clients to spoof ACP identity labels and inject reserved provenance fields meant only for the ACP bridge. The issue was fixed in version 2026.3.28.

Technical Analysis
The vulnerability in OpenClaw CLI's chat.send gateway component involved ACP-only provenance fields being gated by client metadata declared during the WebSocket handshake rather than by verified authorization state. This flaw allowed a normal authenticated operator client to spoof ACP identity labels and inject reserved provenance fields intended exclusively for the ACP bridge. The affected source files were src/gateway/server-methods/chat.ts and src/gateway/server/ws-connection/message-handler.ts. The issue was patched in version 2026.3.28 by requiring verified scope for chat provenance, as implemented in commit 4b9542716c.
Potential Impact
Authenticated operator clients could bypass intended access controls on ACP-only provenance fields by spoofing client identity metadata, potentially allowing them to inject reserved provenance fields. This could lead to unauthorized actions or misattribution within the chat gateway system.
Mitigation Recommendations
A fix is available in OpenClaw CLI version 2026.3.28 and later. Users should upgrade to this version or newer to ensure the vulnerability is remediated.
