Description

A vulnerability in Openclaw CLI's OpenClaw Gateway allows a user with write permissions to reset sessions via the chat.send command, which should be restricted to admin-only operations. This flaw enables unauthorized session rotation and transcript archiving without admin privileges. The issue affects versions from 2026.1.29 up to but not including 2026.3.28. The vulnerability has been fixed in version 2026.3.28.

Technical Analysis

The OpenClaw Gateway's chat.send path improperly reuses command authorization, permitting a write-scoped caller to invoke the /reset session rotation command. This operation is intended as an admin-only control-plane function. Exploiting this vulnerability allows the attacker to rotate a target session, archive the previous transcript, and force a new session ID without requiring admin scope. The affected components include src/gateway/server-methods/chat.ts and src/auto-reply/reply/session.ts. The issue was fixed in commit be00fcfccb, aligning chat.send reset scope checks. Versions <= 2026.3.24 are affected, with the fix included in version >= 2026.3.28.

Potential Impact

An attacker with write-level access to the gateway can reset user sessions and archive prior session transcripts without admin privileges. This could disrupt session continuity and potentially interfere with session management processes. However, the vulnerability does not grant full admin control or broader system compromise.

Mitigation Recommendations

A patch is available and should be applied. The vulnerability is fixed in Openclaw CLI version 2026.3.28 and later. Users should upgrade to this version or newer to remediate the issue.
