Openclaw cli: OpenClaw: Hardlink alias checks could bypass workspace-only file boundaries in specific configurations
Description
OpenClaw CLI versions up to 2026.2.24 have a vulnerability where hardlink aliases inside a workspace can reference files outside the workspace boundary in certain workspace-only restricted configurations. This allows reading and modification of out-of-workspace files through these hardlink aliases. The issue affects deployments that enable workspace-only filesystem restrictions. A fix is available in version 2026.2.25, which rejects hardlinked final-file aliases during workspace boundary validation.

Technical Analysis
In OpenClaw CLI versions up to 2026.2.24, when workspace-only filesystem restrictions are enabled, hardlink aliases inside the workspace could bypass these boundaries by referencing files outside the workspace. This flaw allows unauthorized read and write access to files outside the intended workspace scope. The vulnerability is addressed by rejecting hardlinked final-file aliases during workspace boundary validation for read, write, edit, apply_patch operations, and sandbox mount-root path-safety checks. The fix is included starting with version 2026.2.25.
Potential Impact
The vulnerability allows an attacker with limited privileges to read and modify files outside the designated workspace boundary by exploiting hardlink aliases inside the workspace. This compromises confidentiality and integrity of files outside the workspace. There is no indication of availability impact or known active exploitation in the wild.
Mitigation Recommendations
A patch is available in OpenClaw CLI version 2026.2.25 that rejects hardlinked final-file aliases during workspace boundary validation. Users should upgrade to this version or later to remediate the vulnerability. No additional mitigation actions are specified or required beyond applying the official fix.
