Openclaw cli: OpenClaw has a gateway exec allowlist allow-always bypass via unregistered /usr/bin/script wrapper (CVE-2026-41390)
Description
OpenClaw CLI versions up to 2026.3.24 contain a vulnerability where the allow-always persistence mechanism does not unwrap wrapper binaries like /usr/bin/script before storing trust decisions. This allows a user approval for one wrapped command to persist trust for the wrapper binary, which could later execute a different underlying program without additional user approval. The issue is fixed in version 2026.3.28.

Technical Analysis
OpenClaw CLI's allow-always persistence feature failed to unwrap wrapper binaries such as /usr/bin/script to their actual executed targets before storing trust decisions. Consequently, a user approval granted for a wrapped command could be bypassed by executing a different underlying program through the same wrapper binary, potentially allowing unauthorized code execution. The vulnerability affects versions from 2026.1.29 up to but not including 2026.3.28 and was fixed by commit 83da3cfe31, which unwraps script wrapper approval targets.
Potential Impact
This vulnerability allows an attacker with limited privileges to bypass user approval restrictions by leveraging wrapper binaries to execute arbitrary underlying programs with persisted trust. This can lead to high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impacts as unauthorized commands may run with elevated trust.
Mitigation Recommendations
A patch is available and should be applied. The issue is fixed in OpenClaw CLI version 2026.3.28 and later. Users should upgrade to at least version 2026.3.28 to remediate this vulnerability.
