Openclaw cli: OpenClaw has a path traversal in browser trace/download output paths may allow arbitrary file writes (CVE-2026-28462)
Description
OpenClaw CLI versions prior to 2026.2.13 contain a path traversal vulnerability in the browser control API. This flaw allows user-supplied output paths for trace and download files to escape the intended temporary directories, potentially enabling arbitrary file writes depending on filesystem permissions. The issue affects versions from 2026.1.29 up to but not including 2026.2.13. The vulnerability has been fixed in version 2026.2.13 and later by enforcing strict path constraints on relevant API endpoints.

Technical Analysis
OpenClaw's browser control API did not consistently restrict user-supplied output paths for trace and download files to OpenClaw-managed temporary directories. This path traversal vulnerability could allow an attacker with access to the browser control API to write files outside the intended temporary roots, subject to the process's filesystem permissions. The affected API endpoints are POST /trace/stop, POST /wait/download, and POST /download. The fix, merged on February 13, 2026, enforces temp-root boundaries and rejects traversal or escape paths, mitigating the vulnerability.
Potential Impact
An attacker able to access the browser control API could write arbitrary files outside the designated temporary directories, potentially leading to unauthorized file modification or creation. This could impact the integrity of the system or application data depending on the permissions of the OpenClaw process. There is no indication of confidentiality or availability impact. No known exploits in the wild have been reported.
Mitigation Recommendations
Upgrade OpenClaw CLI to version 2026.2.13 or later. The vendor has released an official fix that constrains output paths for the affected API endpoints, preventing path traversal and arbitrary file writes. Applying this update fully mitigates the vulnerability.
