Openclaw cli: OpenClaw has a path traversal in browser upload allows local file read (CVE-2026-26329)
Description
OpenClaw CLI versions prior to 2026.2.14 contain a path traversal vulnerability in the browser upload functionality that allows authenticated users to read arbitrary files on the Gateway host. This occurs because the server passes user-supplied file paths directly to Playwright's file input APIs without restricting them to a safe directory. Exploitation requires valid authentication and permission to use the browser tool, limiting exposure to authorized users. The vulnerability is fixed in version 2026.2.14 by restricting upload paths to a designated temporary directory and rejecting traversal sequences.

Technical Analysis
Authenticated attackers can exploit a path traversal vulnerability in OpenClaw CLI's browser upload action by supplying absolute or traversal file paths. The server forwards these paths to Playwright's setInputFiles() API without validation, enabling arbitrary local file reads on the Gateway host. This can lead to exfiltration of sensitive files via page JavaScript or browser snapshots. The vulnerability affects versions >=2026.1.29 and <2026.2.14. The fix confines upload paths to a safe temporary directory and rejects traversal attempts, implemented in commit 3aa94afcfd12104c683c9cad81faf434d0dadf87.
Potential Impact
The vulnerability allows an authenticated attacker with access to the Gateway HTTP interface and permission to use the browser tool to read any file on the Gateway host's filesystem. This results in a confidentiality breach of potentially sensitive local files. The impact is high due to arbitrary local file read capability, but exploitation requires valid authentication and appropriate tool permissions, reducing the attack surface. Exposure increases if the Gateway is bound beyond loopback interfaces.
Mitigation Recommendations
A patch is available in OpenClaw CLI version 2026.2.14 and later, which restricts upload paths to a designated temporary directory and rejects path traversal sequences. Users should upgrade to version 2026.2.14 or later to remediate this vulnerability. Until patched, ensure the Gateway is not exposed beyond trusted networks and restrict access to authorized users only. No additional mitigations are specified by the vendor.
