Openclaw cli: OpenClaw has command injection via Windows shell fallback in Lobster tool execution (CVE-2026-32000)

0
Critical
Published: 08/13/2026 (08/13/2026, 17:21:32 UTC)
Source: GCVE Database
Product: openclaw-cli

Description

OpenClaw CLI versions up to 2026.2.17 contain a command injection vulnerability in the Lobster extension tool execution on Windows. The vulnerability arises from a fallback to Windows shell execution with shell metacharacter interpretation after subprocess spawn failures. This allows command injection via crafted command arguments. The issue is fixed in version 2026.2.19 by removing the shell fallback and using explicit executable/script argument execution.

Technical Analysis

The Lobster extension in OpenClaw CLI uses a fallback mechanism on Windows that retries subprocess execution with shell: true after spawn errors EINVAL or ENOENT. This fallback allows shell metacharacters in command arguments to be interpreted by the Windows shell, enabling command injection. The vulnerability affects versions up to and including 2026.2.17. The fix removes the shell fallback and resolves Windows wrappers to explicit executable/script argv execution, eliminating the injection vector.

Potential Impact

An attacker able to influence command arguments in the Lobster tool execution path on Windows can execute arbitrary commands due to shell metacharacter interpretation. This can lead to arbitrary code execution with the privileges of the OpenClaw CLI process. The CVSS vector indicates local attack vector with low complexity, no privileges or user interaction required, and high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Mitigation Recommendations

A patch is available in OpenClaw CLI version 2026.2.19 that removes the vulnerable Windows shell fallback. Users should upgrade to version 2026.2.19 or later to remediate this vulnerability.
