Openclaw cli: OpenClaw has web_search citation redirect SSRF via private-network-allowing policy (CVE-2026-31989)
Description
OpenClaw CLI versions up to 2026.2.26 have a server-side request forgery (SSRF) vulnerability in the Gemini web_search citation redirect feature. This vulnerability allows an attacker who can control citation redirect targets to cause the OpenClaw host to make requests to internal or loopback network addresses. The issue arises because the citation redirect resolution used a private-network-allowing SSRF policy. The vulnerability is fixed in version 2026.3.1 by enforcing a strict SSRF policy that blocks localhost and private/internal redirect targets.

Technical Analysis
The OpenClaw CLI's Gemini web_search citation redirect resolution previously allowed SSRF requests to private and internal network addresses due to a permissive SSRF policy. An attacker able to influence citation redirect URLs could exploit this to make the OpenClaw host perform unauthorized internal network requests. The vulnerability affects versions from 2026.1.29 up to but not including 2026.3.1. The fix implemented in 2026.3.1 restricts SSRF redirects to exclude private and loopback addresses, mitigating the risk.
Potential Impact
An attacker who can control citation redirect URLs can induce the OpenClaw host to send requests to internal or loopback network destinations. This could potentially expose internal services or data accessible only within the private network. However, there is no indication of privilege escalation or direct code execution. The impact is limited to unauthorized internal network request initiation.
Mitigation Recommendations
A patch is available in OpenClaw CLI version 2026.3.1 that enforces a strict SSRF policy disallowing private and localhost network redirects. Users should upgrade to version 2026.3.1 or later to remediate this vulnerability.
