Openclaw cli: OpenClaw host-env blocklist missing `GIT_TEMPLATE_DIR` and `AWS_CONFIG_FILE` allows code execution via env override (CVE-2026-41332)
Description
OpenClaw CLI versions up to 2026.3.24 did not block the environment variables GIT_TEMPLATE_DIR and AWS_CONFIG_FILE in its host execution environment sanitization. These variables can redirect trusted tools like git and AWS CLI to attacker-controlled content, potentially allowing execution of untrusted code or loading of attacker-selected credentials. The issue is fixed in version 2026.3.28 and later.

Technical Analysis
The OpenClaw CLI had a vulnerability in its host execution environment sanitization where the environment variables GIT_TEMPLATE_DIR and AWS_CONFIG_FILE were not blocked. These variables can influence the behavior of git and AWS CLI, respectively, by redirecting them to attacker-controlled configurations. An attacker who obtains an approved execution request could exploit this to execute untrusted code or load malicious credentials. The vulnerability affects versions from 2026.1.29 up to but not including 2026.3.28. The issue was fixed by commit 6eb82fba3c, which added these environment keys to the blocklist.
Potential Impact
An attacker with an approved execution request can manipulate git or AWS CLI behavior by overriding environment variables, leading to execution of untrusted code or loading attacker-chosen credentials. This can compromise the integrity and confidentiality of the host environment.
Mitigation Recommendations
A patch is available and included in OpenClaw CLI version 2026.3.28 and later. Users should upgrade to version 2026.3.28 or newer to mitigate this vulnerability.
